J.Lo is Launching A Skincare Line Making 2019 Better than 2018 Already

J.Lo has always had that picture perfect glow and in 2019 she’ll be offering her signature skincare regimen to the masses via a new line. The Second Act star broke the good beauty news during a speaking engagement held at the Wing in New York City to promote her new movie.

Lopez promised that her forthcoming skincare line would be anything but basic. She shared, “I’ve been working on it for a long time because I don’t want to put just anything out.”

This isn’t Jenny’s first time around the beauty block. The 49-year-old singer and actress already has a number of fragrances under her belt including the popular Glow scent. She collaborated with Inglot earlier this year on a makeup collection that included lip products, highlighters bronzers, and eyeshadows.

J.Lo plans to control the reins on her 2019 skincare line, which will be an independent project. She shared, it’s going to be something that works. That’s what you can count on when my name is on something.”

Lopez went on to say of her soon to debut line, “I want it to be something that encompasses all the things I’ve learned and all the secrets I have. And it doesn’t have anything to do with needles.”

Leave it to the I’m Real singer to make taking better care of my skin an easy 2019 resolution to keep in the New Year.

Press On Nails Are Back & This Trend Looks Better Than Ever

While you were getting your pricey gel manicure, press on nails made a big comeback! Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez have been rocking the easy-to-apply acrylic beauties everywhere and they were a must-have on the runways of New York Fashion Week!

Recently Christian Siriano partnered with popular nail brand KISS to feature its new imPress Press-on Manicure line in his Spring/Summer 2019 Collection fashion show. Siriano’s models sported a custom exotic “twisted zebra” nail look on the runway. Gina Edwards, Lead Manicurist for KISS Products Inc designed the catwalk nail style.

Affordable Kiss Proof Lipstick Brands That Actually Stay Put

I’m a sucker for a great stay put lipstick, especially ones that don’t break the bank. I’ve tried a few dozen high end, drugstore and independent brands over the years and I can tell you that price doesn’t always equal performance.

The trick with finding a good kiss proof lipstick is to search for ones that don’t dry out your lips, aren’t had to remove at night but don’t rub off during the day and aren’t too expensive.

Once you have found a brand or brands you love, remember to stay away from oily foods while wearing – or be ready to reapply. Even the best kiss proof lipstick formulas will slide right off when they come in contact with oil.

And, avoid sleeping in your lipstick – no matter how tempting it might be. You want to give your lips time to breathe between applications.

With that in mind, here are three of my favorite affordable kiss proof lipstick brands that actually stay put.

GRLPWR – The Beauty Crop – $14.95

The Beauty Crop

I’ve been a fan of The Beauty Crop GRLPWR lipstick line for a while now. Available in 10 shades of reds, pinks and peaches, the vegan and cruelty-free brand is a highly pigmented kiss proof lipstick brand that lasts for hours.

My favorite shade – Imma Bawse

Rimmel London – Stay Matte Liquid Lips – $5.49

Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid

Available in 14 shades the Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Lips packs a lot of kiss proof lipstick power in a .21 oz tube. The formula feels light and doesn’t leave your lips feeling like sandpaper at the end of the day.

My favorite shade – Plum This Show

Nicka K – 24 Hour Lip Color – $3.99

Nicka K Affordable Kiss Proof Lipstick That Actually Stays Put

Nicka K lip color and primer may be the most affordable kiss proof lipstick on the market. I discovered this on in a beauty supply store in mid-town Manhattan and have tried – and loved – nearly all 14 shades. The color lasts as well as more expensive brands and

My favorite shade – ND12 (Wine)

The New Gallany Metallic Lipsticks on Dark Skin, Oh My

From chrome nails to super sparkly lips, metallic was one of the top beauty trends of the year. You can totally expect the trend to continue in 2017, as more brands get creative with the look.

Since I love a good colored pout, I was very curious to see how metallic shades would work on my beautifully dark skin.

I got my hands on all five of the new Gallany Metallic Lipsticks and tested them out.

The line is a fav of Billy B, Beyonce and Lady Gaga’s makeup artist and made in the USA.

Gallany Metallic Lipsticks Collection

All five shades are infused with Hungarian lilac extract, edelweiss and hyaluronic moisture magnets for intense hydration. It also includes Lavender emollients which repair and smooth dry winter lips. And it’s triple-milled with a built-in lip primer, so it’s designed to hold up all day.

Shades in Order: (L to R) Scarlett, Bailey, Toddy, Cosmo, No Shade

I started with the No Shade – a rose shade that looks more neutral on my dark skin.

Then I moved on to the Cosmo – a sultry pink that looked more neutral-broonze on my dark skin.

From there I tried the Toddy – a golden peach that looked more golden than peach on my skin.

Next, I sampled the Bailey – a rich chocolate brown that looked absolutely delicious on my skin.

I tried the Scarlett shade last, since secretly, I knew I was going to love it. Bold reds are kinda my color and this one was no exception.

All the shades felt smooth on my lips and even after applying and removing five shades back-to-back, my lips didn’t feel dry at the end of the testing process.

Bailey and Scarlett tie as my two favorite metallic shades for the line with Cosmo coming in second place.

Gallany Metallic Scarlett is one of my new favs!!!

Tyra Beauty: Sadly, A More Drab Than Fab Makeup Line

I admire nearly everything about beauty boss Tyra Banks. The model, actress, TV host, producer, business maven and new mom has been blazing a trail for more than two decades. The woman who taught the world to smize – smile with your eyes – is the epitome of fierce and I expected her first beauty line to be as fab as she is. Unfortunately, I learned that even a runway queen can stumble and this makeup line is as drab as that sad realization.

I received four products from the new Tyra Beauty line – two shades of Sculpt In A Stick, a Cheek In A Stick  and a Fashion-Able Blush  –  for review and the best thing I can say about them is they arrive packaged beautifully. I wasn’t able to actually try any of the products out, because well – they are poorly made.

2016-03-25 16.04.06Of the three makeup sticks, I received – two of the sticks were broken and stuck to the top of the makeup cap and the third was broken and fell into my sink when I opened it. The blush I received (a round cylinder with a gold cap) opened easily the first time. After I twisted it shut, I couldn’t get it open again to test it – and I tried everything except shattering it open.

Tyra Beauty 4I wrote to the company and asked if they had a quality control issue with the product and what recourse buyers had if they received damaged product. The company’s quick reply gave me hope:

Tyra Banks 3

Regrettably, that hope was misplaced. The replacement makeup products they sent me had the exact same issues. Again, the makeup sticks were broken and stuck to the top of the makeup caps.

Tyra Beauty 5

Tyra Beauty 6

Tyra Beauty 7

I’m not sure if they did or didn’t check out the second set of makeup sticks before mailing them, so I can’t say if they are being damaged in transit or before. What I can say is no one should pay good money for makeup they can’t use!

I’ll still enjoy watching reruns of America’s Next Top Model but would totally recommend waiting a few seasons before ordering any of the Tyra Beauty products.

Makeup in your Mailbox: 4 Beauty Subscriptions You Can’t Live Without

I’ve written about subscription boxes before, but there seems to be a new one lauching every week. I’ll admit, there’s something indescribably pleasing about checking your mail and finding it full of different bags and boxes that you know are full of makeup and skincare products. It’s like Christmas, only it comes once a month instead of once a year.

There are so many beauty boxes on the market that it can be hard to decide which one(s) offers the best value. Below I’ve listed four of my favorites to help give you an idea of what you can expect if you’re looking to experiment with this ever-growing trend.

A video posted by ipsy (@ipsy) on

At the very reasonable price of $10.00 a month, the Ipsy Glam Bag is one of the best values in the world of monthly beauty subscriptions. Instead of being shipped in a box, your Glam Bag is exactly what it sounds like… an adorable makeup bag that matches the theme of the month. Most of the included products are sample sized, but in each shipment, they will include one or two full sized products that can range from a dual ended eyeshadow brush to a creamy lip stain.

Lip Monthly

A photo posted by Lip Monthly (@lipmonthly) on

If you love experimenting with your lips, you’re going to love Lip Monthly. For $12.95 a month, you’ll be sent a makeup bag that comes with four to five full-sized products inside. While eyeliner will always be my first love, I can’t deny the obsession I have with trying new shades of lipstick. I’ve been sent everything from Nudes, Blushes, Bright Reds, and even a dark green that I am now digging.

A photo posted by Julep (@julepmaven) on

I’m kind of obsessed with Julep.  Like Lip Monthly, Julep focuses on one area of beauty and does it extremely well. Their colors are super smooth and pigmented with extremely long wearability without chipping. Recently they’ve expanded to include premium makeup in their monthly offering, but it’s an option you needed to actively select and at $25.00 a month, I love that they give me the option to completely customize my experience.

A photo posted by birchbox (@birchbox) on

Some call it the original beauty box subscription. I’ve noticed they include the most sample sizes products from this service, but the range of products still make it one of the most popular options around. The box is beautifully designed and each item expertly coordinates with the other giving you a very unified experience for $10.00 a month. They have recently started offering pre-curated boxes as well so if you’re not interested in a surprise, you can know exactly which products will be coming your way.

Four Beauty Apps I’m Obsessed With That You’ll Love

The marriage between fashion and tech has heated up in the last few years, but it looks like 2016 will be the year tech made personalized beauty a reality.

With the introduction of several new mobile beauty apps, women – and especially women of color – are being given access to digital  hair and skin care tools and resources designed to meet their unique beauty needs. These apps help save time, money and hassle, by making it easy for women to virtually test out a lip or skin product, recommending hair and skin products based on users’ unique beauty profile, and providing on-demand access to styling experts.

I’ve been testing out a lot of beauty apps lately but here are the four that I’m obsessed with and I know you’ll love.

Morgan Taylor – Virtual Nail Salon

A publicists friend sent me details on this virtual nail color tester app last year and I thought it was just ok. I retried the app recently after their 2016 upgrade and fell down the rabbit-hole of nail color nirvana.

Morgan Taylor 1

The app allows you to view more than 100 Morgan Taylor lacquer shades on various skin types and nail shapes and lengths. You can also use the app to “match a color” by taking a photo of any color you like and letting the app show you the closest Morgan Taylor nail polish shade to your pic. You can “favorite” your top selections and save them to your phone camera roll for social sharing or quick viewing access.

2016-03-25 09.09.05

You can’t purchase directly from the app yet – which is a little bit of a bummer – but can order your fav shades directly from the Morgan Taylor website.

TresseNoire – On-demand Natural Hair Styling

The first time I used TresseNoire was for my wedding last year and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Getting glam on my wedding day with TresseNoire

The on-demand hair styling service sends credentialed natural-hair care trained styling professionals to your home or office to get your coils tight. TresseNoire recently released its first mobile app which allows you to schedule hair styling sessions and consultations at the touch of a button.

tressenoire 1The affordable service is currently available in New York and Philadelphia. I’d recommend signing up for the app even if you are not in those areas, so you’ll be notified when service starts in your city. Once you try it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Cocoa Swatches – Virtual Makeup Counter

I read about the Cocoa Swatches online and felt compelled to test it out immediately. Specially designed for women of color, the app allows you to see how makeup shades look on brown skin. A simple idea – ahem, makeup industry – but one that saves you the hassle of having to return that too-good-to-be-true, blush that you couldn’t try on in the drug store.

Cocoa Swatches

The app also provides video tutorials, reviews and tips from makeup experts. It also provides a link to purchase all the products featured on the app.

Cocoa Swatch 2

The app has a ton of swatches on the app, but look for it to get even better as the platform grows and more shades comparisons are uploaded.

Cast Beauty – Weather-Beauty Forecasting

Cast Beauty is one of those “the future is now” type of apps. The weather-inspired beauty forecasting app provides daily hair and skin care product recommendations based on the weather and users’ beauty profiles. I’ve been working with them for a few months and think the service is so cool.   Who among us hasn’t spent a full Sunday getting our hair tight only to have it ruined by a burst of humidity on Monday?

Cast Beauty 1

The idea that an app can help me avoid bad hair days just makes me say, “YAAASSS. And, what took so long?”

Cast Beauty 2

Sometimes you need that forewarning to check your edges:).

The app lets you purchase any recommended products directly through your Amazon account (which can be a little dangerous for Prime subscribers like myself). Cast Beauty is still in its initial phases and the app will continue to get smarter as more users create profiles and the database grows.

Since we all check the weather each morning anyway, why not try Cast Beauty and get your daily temperature and beauty forecast in one?

Let me know what you think of these beauty apps.

From Frightening To Fab, How the New Kate Moss Nude Lipstick Collection Looks On A Dark Skin

Finding the perfect nude lipstick is a challenge for women of all complexions, but is doubly difficult for women of color. For years, major makeup brands have opted out of creating shades that would compliment darker skin tones and Black women have been left to mix their own shades or seek out hard to find independent lines that catered to out melanin kissed skin. It was a frustrating process, to say the least, but it looks like some makeup brands are starting to pay attention.

Rimmel London just released the new Kate Moss Nude Lip collection with the promise of providing a “chic shade for everyone.” Designed by the supermodel the 10 shade Collections offers lipsticks in delicate pinks, subtle apricots, cashmere beiges and rich toffee tones. So, I decided to test all the shades in the Collection to see if the line lived up to its promise.

Complete Kate Moss Collection

Some shades looked frightening awful, but others looked positively fab. Check out the outcome of each shade below:

Kate Moss Collection Shade 40

#040 – A Pale Nude

Looks Terrible on me.

Kate Moss Collection Shade 41

#041 – A Pink Nude

Pretty in pink I am not in this shade.

Kate Moss Collection Shade 42

#042 – An Apricot Nude

I couldn’t even crack a smile in this shade.

Kate Moss Collection Shade 43

#043 – A Tan Nude

Ok, now we’re getting somewhere.

Kate Moss Collection Shade 44

#044 – a Coral Nude

I could rock this one with the right blush and shadow.

Kate Moss Collection Shade 45

#045 – a Rose Nude

Not nude on me, but totally cute.

Kate Moss Collection Shade 46

#046 – An Olive Nude

Not great, but not awful either.

Kate Moss Collection Shade 47

#047 – A Brandy Nude, #048

No quite nude on me, but a rich shade that was fun to rock.

Kate Moss Collection Shade 48

#048 – A Dark Nude

Loved this shade. I could rock it all day.

Kate Moss Collection Shade 49

#049 – A Coffee Nude

This shade was my second favorite. It looked fabulous on my skin tone.

So, I guess the Kate Moss Nude Lip Collection is a winner in my book. I’d love to see Rimmel London extend the line to include some shades for women darker than me, but this is a great nude Collection to try. You can pick up the full Collection exclusively at Walmart and each tube runs $5.79.

Beauty, Tech,

Beauty Tech: Adorn 3D Foundation Pen Prints Custom Shades For Any Ethnicity (Whoo-hoo)

Finding the perfect foundation is like searching for a needle in a haystack for most women and is damn near impossible for luscious brown skinned women like me;). I usually buy several shades and mix them together to get a foundation hue closest to my natural tone, which can be expensive and inefficient at times. Plus, I always feel a tiny bit bitter about having to pay for products that say they were made for me and then having to spend time making them right at home.

Well it looks like me (and millions of women) can stop all the arts and crafts hacks on our foundation and still get the custom shade we need thanks to a little tech innovation.

Adorn, a new 3D foundation pen, will match, mix and print out the perfect hue for women of all ethnicity. At the touch of a button, the pen’s inbuilt scanner does a color analysis of the users face. It then uses results to blend multi-hued foundation shades in the cylinder of the pen. Once the perfect shade has been achieved, it prints the bespoke color base straight onto the user’s fingertips.

The Adorn pen has the capacity to create more than 75,000 shades of foundation, meaning the odds of matching your shade are probably 75,000 times better than selecting a one in a poorly lit and poorly stocked drug store.

Adorn-13 (1)

Adorn 3D Foundation Pen is currently available in five colors for pre-order for $139 and will ship Q2 of 2016. The foundation cartridges run $20.

Adorn-5I’m already excited for this for the simple fact that it will take the guess work out of buying foundation and save me time mixing shades to match my skin tone. I’m definitely looking forward to testing out this makeup tool as soon as it is released and will post an update of the results.

Be Inspired, Beauty,

Business and Beauty: Entrepreneur Jermelle F. Pitts Breaks Through With New 1969 Beauty Line

1969 Beauty 4Beauty is a billion dollar business. That is billion with a capital “B.” With so many options on the market (and there are thousands), it may be difficult to identify the brands with value from the ones that will leaving looking clownish (I still can’t believe that clown contouring is a thing).

This is where cosmetics designer, pop culture entrepreneur, Jermelle F. Pitts Jermelle Pittscomes in. His new line 1969 Beauty is timeless, edgy and affordable and designed to give women a flawless transformation. After spending years styling models and celebrities on networks like Oxygen, Style, MTV and B.E.T, Pitts decided to create his own go-to beauty line. Inspired by his mom, who was born in 1969, the makeup line includes lipsticks, shadows, mascaras, glosses, eyelashes and primer ranging from $5.69 – $27.69.

I caught up with the triple threat entrepreneur, cosmetics designer and creative director to find out about his journey to breaking through a competitive marketplace and his beauty tips for busy entrepreneurs.

Check out the interview below.

Where are you from?

I am originally from Houston, Texas Baby (Beyoncé voice), but now I’m living on the West Coast. I moved to Los Angeles last year for inspiration and to launch 1969 Beauty.

1969 Beauty Promo ImageWhat has been the most difficult part of creating you beauty line?

The “what ifs.” What if this doesn’t work? What if this really does work? I’m always thinking what if? I create things I love and then I sell it. My career is in the consumers’ hands.

How do you ensure your products stand out in a crowded beauty marketplace?1969 Beauty 3

I don’t just sell a product; I sell a lifestyle. 1969 Beauty is a brand not just a product. I am a Pop Culture Entrepreneur meaning I am in-touch with what my consumers need and what their interest are. I’m in touch with what’s going on around me. I’m very involved in my brand. I have an eye for detail. I understand the importance of formulations and pigmentations. Also, the quality of my products for the price is amazing. My lipsticks are $12.69, but for the quality and pigmentation should be $21.99, if not more. My buyers really appreciate that.

What is your favorite makeup tip to share with women?

Take care of your canvas. Your canvas being your skin. A lot of women aren’t cleansing and hydrating their face as they should. I’ve worked on clients and I’m looking at their pores, discoloration and black heads. I immediately know they aren’t washing their face and maintaining the skin under the makeup.

1969 Beauty 2What advice would you give others wanting to start their own beauty business or any business?

Make sure you are doing what you love and have a true passion for it. Surround yourself with like-minded people. I don’t mind being the dumbest person in the room, because everyone that I surround myself with are smart, successful and have crazy wisdom. I’m taking mental notes and learning from them. As entrepreneurs it’s important to put together a strong team and get rid of the “yes men.”

Anything else you’d love people to know?

Our Instagram and Twitter account is @1969beauty. My Instagram and Twitter is @jermelle. Also people can register on the website to keep up with the latest products, news and discounts. We also have a YouTube channel launching where we’ll provide demonstrations, product knowledge, and interviews some of today’s hottest makeup artist and celebrities. It’s all about beauty darling!
