True Lipz Founders Use Entrepreneurial Skills To Improve A Beauty Staple

Lesley Levy & Lisa Rabinovich

There’s a famous saying: “lips without lipstick is like cake without frosting.” I don’t know if I would subscribe to that theory, but I’ve just connected with two entrepreneurs who would make me question my stance.  True Lipz founders Lesley Levy and Lisa Rabinovich sent over three shades of their luscious lip gloss for me to review and I was impressed before I even tried them on.

It takes entrepreneurial genius to improve upon a product considered a IMG_2997beauty staple to millions of women and that is exactly what the ladies have done. Their lip glosses range from $19 – $25 and come in a an array of flattering shades including my new favorite. What makes True Lipz unique on the inside is its core ingredients of Lanolin and Dragon’s Blood (you read that right) hydrate and condition when you put it on. What makes the product unique on the outside is its well-designed tube. Each gloss includes a small side mirror and a click-able light that you can use to reapply the product at night, in the car or anywhere. A Macgyver fanatic like me loves the idea of having a mini flashlight on me at all times and I found it to be a very handy tool in my purse.

our-story-billboard-foregroundI connected with the New York (Lisa) and South African (Lesley) natives to find out what inspired their creation and what tips they would give others looking to become entrepreneurs:

Purified Lanolin What motivated you to start True Science?

We thought that it was interesting that both of us, on two different coasts, in two different climates were experiencing the same dry lips no matter which lip products we were using. After informally discussing this with many women in our lives, we realized everyone was having the same problem and we were all just accepting our fates!

What did you two (Lisa and Lesley) do before starting your company?

Lisa: My background was in fashion, beauty and jewelry PR and event planning. I left the business 11 years ago when my daughter was born and have been busy raising my 3 kids and organizing/running non-profit events since then.

Lesley: I did financial sales for a Wall St. Commodity trader and, prior to that, owned a diamond wholesale company, designing one of a kind pieces.

Screenshot2Why did you choose to focus on the lips for your first product?

Out of totally selfish necessity! We needed to fix our own lips!

What type of people buy your items?

There isn’t one type of person who buys True Lipz, it has a wide age range appeal. Dry lips are a universal problem and women of all ages are attracted to the idea of being able to have a fashionable lip product that actually heals.

lipglossWhich lip gloss color is your favorite? Why?

Lisa: In the Lustrè collection, L037 is my favorite. It is a beautiful plum that you can really take from day to night, either dressed up or down. I find it looks universally good on everyone, no matter what hair color or complexion.

Lesley: L030 from the Lustrè collection is my favorite. It is a great neutral that wears well day or night.

Where can Tue Lipz be purchased?

We are mainly available on our website. We have a few retail outlets and are currently working on expanding that leg of the business.

What advice would you give other entrepreneurs looking to start their own business?

Find something relatable in your life that you think you can improve upon, whether it’s a product or a service.

What is one goal you have set for your company for 2015?

To expand (our) business!

I’m looking forward to watching these ladies grow their beauty line and inspiring others to do the same.

Celebrity Stylist Adds Sparkle to Hair Care Industry with New Line

Daniel Koye Head ShotWorking your way up to become one of the top professionals in a field is no easy task for any business maven. For entrepreneurs like Daniel Koye getting to the top is only part of the climb; being able to Improve the field is the real mark of success.

Known as one of the best celebrity stylists on The Great White Way, Koye has been responsible for styling the locks of Broadway’s biggest stars including Dame Shirley Bassey, Carol Burnett, Cicely Tyson and Carol Channing. Unsatisfied with the efficacy of the products on the market, he set out to create a professional hair care line that could withstand the bright lights of the stage for celebrities and long days & nights for urbanistas.

With the release of his new styling collection, DKOYE; he is ready to transform the hair care industry from the inside out. Ranging from $19-$50 the line includes all the products you need to keep your mane camera ready from shampoo to smoothing cream.

I caught up with Koye on the eve of the launch of his new collection to ask about his best business tips and what’s next for his growing empire:

DKoye CollectionWhat inspired you to get started as a stylist?

My mother was a huge influence on my career. She was a gifted hairstylist and had a salon set up in the basement of our home.  It was there that I first began playing with her wigs and styling them. I never stopped.

What lead you to start DKOYE?

I started DKOYE because I wanted to create a hair product line that inspired people to look as sexy as they feel. My hope is that the products will support people’s creativity, so they can have fun with their hair. I placed rhinestones on the bottles to give customers something to look forward to when styling their hair whether it’s to head out to work or for a special event. There’s something about sparkles that gets people excited.

What’s the most challenging part of running your own business/being a freelancer?

Keeping focused is a major challenge when you’re juggling so many balls. It’s your responsibility to ensure you have everything in place so that your business operates smoothly. It’s equally important to stay true to your vision and not be led astray from your goals.

What is the best thing you love about what you do?

CREATING!  I love the challenge of transforming an actor or actress into a character with hair and makeup. The entire creative process is thrilling to me. And it varies depending on if I’m working on Broadway, television or film. It’s a privilege to be entrusted with cultivating an entire look for a production. It’s many things but boring is not one of them!

  1. Never give up.  Slow and steady wins the race.
  2. Take risks.  You only live once right?!?
  3. Love what you do. The passion you have for your work will shine through and touch everything and everyone you encounter.

With celebrity royalty such as Vanessa Williams, Heidi Klum, Lea Michelle and Susan Lucci already using the new line, we know Koye’s advice should be followed by all those looking to take their game to the next level. And, speaking of game — you can also catch Koye on the season premiere of RuPaul’s Drag RaceHis line, DKOYE was selected to be the official hair care product of the season on Logo TV’s most popular show and he’ll be making a special appearance. This feels like the right next step for an entrepreneur looking to upgrade the masses to his sparkling collection.

Print Your Makeup At Home: With The MINK 3D Printer You Can

grace choiWhat happens when you make creating makeup at home as easy printing a photo off the internet? That’s the question that inventor Grace Choi is seeking to answer with her at home 3D makeup printer, MINK. The printer, which is about as big as an iMac, eliminates the need for women to shell out hefty amounts of cash at department store makeup counters and drug stores by allowing them to print any shade of powder, lipstick or shadow at home. This nifty and simple invention essentially turns any iPhone, computer or digital camera into a your own personal beauty boutique.

Mink PrinterChoi, the 30-year-old serial inventor, Harvard Business School graduate and former Burger King Food Innovator, previously created a line of medical devices and interchangeable jewelry that was marketed on the Home Shopping Network. As a Korean American with entrepreneurial parents, Choi was able to learn much about business and negotiation from watching her father run his simple fruit store. She has used that same business acumen to revolutionize the inequalities of the beauty industry.

With Mink, multicultural consumers will have the ability to create makeup that is specially designed for their skin tones and hues. It’s a game-changer and has the power to disrupt the $55 billion dollar beauty industry, by eliminating the step up purchasing makeup produced for mass consumer consumption which tend to be lighter skin tones. Choi is seeking to release MINK to consumers in 2015, and is currently allowing developers to create software for the product. She estimates MINK will retail for $200 – $300 when it is first released, with the price dropping as sales increase.

That seems like a fair price to have the power to create personally customized makeup that is created by you for you. I’m looking forward to trying the MINK when it goes on sale. I’ll also post a follow up review too.

Expert Tips To Gain A #Flawless Brand Worthy Smile

Dr Nadia Rodriguez

Smile Expert Dr. Nadia Rodriguez

In the age of endless selfies, usies, Instagram shots and Vines, your personal brand image is always on display.  Every pic and clip becomes part of your public narrative and impacts how people perceive you. A great smile can directly influence not only how you’re perceived, but also how many likes, followers, shares, comments, and email pitch responses you receive. Every entrepreneur, PR professional, and blogger is brand and you need to put your best foot forward. I caught up with dental expert, Dr. Nadia Rodriguez of No Limits Dental to find out her tips for keeping your smile brand worthy at all times.

Why do you think people are more trusting of professionals with great smiles?

A great smile shows that you take the time to take care of yourself. If people see something wrong with your smile they subconsciously wonder what else is being neglected?

Jay Z, Beyonce and Blue Ivy flashing #Flawless Smiles

What does a great smile say about you?

Having a great smile shows people you care about how you present yourself and it shows future employers and clients that you will represent them well too. First impression is everything. Your smile instantly leaves an impression with people letting them know whether or not you are smart, successful and well put together.

What are some quick things someone can do to improve their smile before a media interview or business presentation?

  1. See a dentist! We can clean off years of stains and plaque in minutes, which you would not be able to remove at home.
  2. Crest white strips help whiten at home and work pretty well if used as directed
  3. Wear a blue based red lipstick to make your teeth instantly appear whiter
  4. Add bronzer to your face to give you a sun kissed glow to make your teeth look whiter
  5. Avoid coffee and wine because that stains your teeth and also dries out your mouth causing bad breath

The Material Girl Beaming With Confidence

What should someone with a not so great smile/teeth do to correct it?

The first step is think about what you don’t like about your smile and what you would like to change. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What one person may think is a problem, another may think is gorgeous. Look at Madonna and the gap between her teeth. She still has a beautiful smile although many people get braces to correct any gaps they may have. Second step is go see a dentist to fix any issues you may or may not be aware of. Third, daily maintenance is the key to a healthy smile.

What three tips you recommend to help someone maintain their healthy smile?

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes. I recommend an electric toothbrush which plugs into an outlet because it helps many patients reach areas a manual toothbrush cannot and most have a 2 minute timer on them which lets you know when you are done brushing. Don’t forget to floss too!
  2. Drink lots of water throughout the day and especially after meals.
  3. See a dentist every 6 months to help you maintain that beautiful smile.

Following Dr. Nadia’s tips will help you leverage a brand worthy, #Flawless smile for years to come.

Carol’s Daughter Sells (Not Sells Out) To L’Oreal

Lisa PriceThe world was all  a-twitter recently with the news that Carol’s Daughter had been acquired by beauty giant L’Oreal. Did African American founder Lisa Price sell out her business and legacy to the highest bidder? Did she turn her back on her loyal followers and the Black community by handing over the reigns of her business to a faceless conglomerate? Hardly.

Carol's Daughter Essentials - Almond Cookie Cleansing Gel and Body Butter

Carol’s Daughter Essentials – Almond Cookie Cleansing Gel and Body Butter

Mrs. Price did what smart business owners do. She took advantage of a great opportunity to grow her brand even further and tap into resources that can help accelerate her vision of making multicultural beauty an industry priority. Price has built a successful business over the years. From her early days of mixing her all natural products in her Brooklyn kitchen to attracting big name celebrities to invest in her dream to becoming a household name; she has stayed focused and created beauty brand so popular that it couldn’t be ignored. What’s the next logical step once you start the ripple in the tide?  She has put herself in the position to steer the wave.

Price has an agenda that I’d dare to say is bigger that the packaging that her products come in. And, she just became L’Oreal’s expert on multicultural beauty. Let’s celebrate, not undermine her bold steps to steer the industry from the inside out.

You can call Lisa Price many things: visionary, author, beauty mogul, mom, community leader, wife, job creator, trail blazer; but you’d be shortsighted to call her a sell out. She’s already invested two decades to changing the beauty industry as an outsider. Imagine what she’ll do in the decades to come from the helm.

Beauty at the Press of a Button: Uber Beauty Apps

Want food in an hour? There’s an app for that. Need a car to take you to the airport? There’s an app for that. Need flowers delivered to your BFF? There’s an app for that too.  Beauty is no different. There is no more hassle required when it comes to booking an appointment for gorgeous hair or glamorous nails. There are a number of apps that allow you to book a stylist to visit you right in your home or office. The convenience of having a stylist or nail artist come straight to your home isn’t a new concept, but it is starting to gain popularity among women who are getting busier by the day and cannot spare time to go to the salon. You book the appointment, select what service you want, leave a few details, pay with a credit card through the app, and then a stylist shows up at your door ready to make you look great. It is that simple.

Here are a four Uber Beauty Apps that can get you looking your best:

Glam Squag 2Glamsquad

This is the top app in the app store in terms of beauty and is the first to pop up. It is by far considered an Uber of Beauty app, letting you book a stylist and using their secure app to punch in an address, credit card info for payment, and product allergies. Once you hit ‘book’, a stylist shows up at your door within an hour with their own salon-grade equipment and products. All you need is an outlet and a comfy chair. Services typically take about 45-minutes, or a little longer depending on the intricacy of the service. No cash needs to change hands making this a simple service that automatically adds a 20% tip to the charge on the credit card you input. You can get both hair and makeup done through this service.

This app is very similar to Glamsquad, allowing you to pick your style of hair and makeup before booking as well as having a secured app for credit card information. Only major difference here is that you can choose your payment type and states that all their stylists go through a rigorous screening process. This service is only available in New York City and Los Angeles.

Blow meBlow Me

Another quirky-named app similar to the two above, offering hair services in the comfort of your home and office. They charge a flat fee of $40 automatically to your card upon completion of the service. As they say, “No Tips, No Cash”.

Top Coat Screen ShotTopCoat

This app is specifically for glamorous nails, letting you choose from hundreds of unique styles from licensed nail artists, from the comfort of your couch. If you have your own design in mind, they will accommodate you. Payment here is also done over the app, so you don’t need to mess up those new perfectly manicured nails by grabbing cash.

There are other apps that offer similar beauty services around the country. Check out the app store to find one that works in your area and benefit from the convenience of never having to leave your house without looking spectacular. With life becoming more technology dependent, it was only a matter of time before we were able to control our beauty routines at the touch of a button.
