6 Tips to Drink Your Way to Better Skin This Season

The days may be getting shorter but that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your favorite outdoor drinking spot just yet. Just remember that it’s just as important to protect your skin in the fall as it is in the summer. Of course, nothing beats slathering on sunscreen for better skin, but making conscious choices about what you drink – and when – can have a big impact on your overall skin health.

6 Tips To Drink Your Way To Better Skin

We know – probably from firsthand experience that we’d like to forget – that adult beverages can be rather dehydrating even as the temperature gets cooler. But the damage may go beyond a rough hangover.  Repetitive dehydration cycles can cause wrinkles and collagen loss making us look older faster.

6 Tips To Drink Your Way To Better Skin

Skincare and scent expert Lynette Lovelace is not about that life.  She is consistently advising -not ready to let go of the sun – sippers to “pour the Pinot Noir, and of course, grab a bottle of water!” As the founder of  Lifetherapy, a company built of scent therapy, Lovelace knows the importance of striking the right balance between indulgence and self-care — whether you’re selecting a mood boosting body scrub or spirit.  She recommends “staying away from the caffeinated drinks, sugary mixers and anything with salt” which can cause skin to produce excess oil, under-eye bags and bloating.

6 Tips To Drink Your Way To Better Skin

It is also wise to alternate between drinking an eight-ounce glass of water for every wine, beer or cocktail consumed to make sure you’re not stripping too much water from your body. Basically, you should order – and finish – a round of waters with every round of drinks to keep everything soft and supple.

Don’t forget that even fully hydrated, some of the best-spiked drinks are still strong enough to make you lose track of how long you’ve been in the sun. A tried and true lounging tip to protect your skin in these moments is to set your phone timer for two-hour intervals and reapply sunscreen each time it goes off. It’s a simple way to avoid a sunburn and long-term damage to your skin.

Dr. Rosemary Ingleton, a board-certified NYC dermatologist and sought-after skincare expert also advises ditching that Margarita if you’re going to lay out in the sun. “Lime juice can sensitize the skin to the sun and cause skin discoloration.” She suggests you bask with her seasonal drink of choice, a glass of rosé instead.

However, the good doctor cautions people with rosacea to “avoid red wine, rosé or any other hard liquors.” The redness causing and acne-like skin disorder affects more than 16 million Americans and can be exacerbated by these alcohols. White wine is a safer fun in the sun drink choice if you are affected.

Regardless of your skin condition, reducing the frequency of your drinks will have a positive impact on your skin and overall body health. When it comes drinking and protecting your skin, it goes without saying that smarter choices overtime will lead to you looking and feeling good, a heck of a lot longer.

That’s not to say that you should swear off your favorite spirit – the sun filled days will be gone before we know it, after all. Just know a great drink once in a while is always better than a few OK ones every night. Be choosy. Your skin will thank you in the long run.

No Sweat – Skip The Post Workout Shower With the New Simply Summer’s Eve Line

Disclosure: This post is sponsored; however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

I’ve been really focused on prioritizing my health lately and taking better care of myself. That means eating better and hitting the gym as often as possible. Both can be challenging with a busy schedule, but I’ve been trying out different tricks to make my days flow as easy as possible. Things like writing down what I eat during the day, packing my purse with healthy snacks and hitting the gym in the early morning – before I start my day – have all helped me shed 25 pounds and put some extra energy back in my steps.

So, when I got an invite to try a new surfing workout as part of the new Simply Summer’s Eve launch I was totally down.

The event was held at Surfset Studio, a cool fitness spot in New York City and it was so much fun! Yes. You actually do “surf,” but there is no water involved:).

The surfboard is actually placed on top of three balance balls and you do surfing and pilates inspired moves on top of the board.

It’s a moderately intense workout designed to strengthen your core (tummy), tone your full body and improve your balance. I had never stepped foot on a surfboard before my workout, so it felt a little odd at first. I actually lost my balance once or twice but felt totally comfortable with each of the moves by the end of the 30-minute class.
I also was sweating bullets by the end and a little worried about offending my fellow attendees with my post-workout smell.

Luckily, we were covered here too. Simply Summer’s Eve is a new line of on-the-go cleansing cloths and foaming wash that are formulated to help maintain a natural pH and get rid of odor-causing bacteria. The cloths are individually wrapped – perfectly sized to keep in a purse or gym bag – and I wiped myself down with a Mandarin Blossom scented one before chatting with my new workout buddies.

The scent was light and pleasant and the cloth worked really. When I got home after the event I asked my hubby if I smelled (cause he would be totally honest with me) and he said, “no, why were you working out?” The fact that he couldn’t tell means I’ll be keeping these little wonders in my gym bag from now on.

So, I totally scored twice at this event with a great workout and new post-workout odor killing wipes. Honestly, it’s three times if you count the fab mermaid crown I got from Crowns by Christie. Can’t wait to rock mine at the next beach party.

Simply Summer’s Eve also comes in a Coconut Water scent and hits shelves in May 2017.

Fashion Week Upgrade – Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant

Tracking PixelDisclosure: This post is sponsored; however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Let’s be real. It’s hard to feel like a Boss with a capital “B,” when you’re wondering if the person that smells a little less than flattering is you.

We’ve all been there. Running around knocking tasks off the to-do list when you suddenly realize that your deodorant quit working way before you did. So, you sneak off to the ladies’ room or make a pit stop at the drugstore to buy a new stick, to reapply.

I reluctantly admit that this embarrassing chain of events has happened to me once twice a few times before, so I was more than intrigued when Dove sent me a sample of its new line of Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant to try out.

So, Here’s the Skinny:

There are 17 scents of Dove Advanced Care and I tried Soothing Chamomile. It smells awesome and a little like a light aromatherapy candle. My underarms totally felt noticeably smoother after each use. I chalk this up to the fact that like its bar soap, Dove Advanced Care is made with ¼ moisturizers and NutriumMoisture.

I used it for a few days while I was working and didn’t have to reapply once. Dove Advanced Care provides 48-hour odor and wetness protection, which is amazing. I shower every day so I didn’t get to test the effectiveness of going two days straight without reapplying, but I did use it during the final days of New York Fashion Week.

It was fabulous to feel dry as a cucumber throughout my crazy, hectic schedule of shows, previews, events and story deadlines. I’m glad I tried Dove Advanced Care and upgraded my deodorant because my life is way too busy to bother with products that don’t keep up with me.
Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant retails for $4.99.

Try it out before your next hectic event and let me know what you think.

YoDerm Lets You Visit the Dermatologist Without Leaving Home, But Is It Worth It?

Visiting the dermatologist is a painful experience – in my opinion. Just getting an appointment with a reputable dermo takes more dedication than landing a spot at Harvard. And, you have to mentally prep for emotional turmoil of paying out of pocket for your visit, since (at least in my case) the treatments are considered “cosmetic” by the insurance company.

I’m pretty sure I had heart palpitations the first time the receptionist at my dermo’s office handed me a $1,100 bill for my sessions and treatment. Seriously, no one should have to choose between clear skin and paying their rent.

So, I was pretty curious when a new online dermatologist company reached out to me to try it out. YoDerm is a web-platform which connects patients with board-certified dermatologists who provide acne and acne related consultations on-demand.

2016-09-06_9-11-00The service costs $59 for the consultation and works by having the patient upload a makeup-free photo to the platform and complete an individual skin type profile. Disclosure: My consultation fee was waived by the company, but no compensation was provided for this review.

2016-09-06_9-17-30

My Consultation Pic

Within 24 hours a doctor evaluates the image and profile and provides a diagnosis and treatment plan.

2016-09-06_9-08-32

My doctor prescribed the over-the-counter face wash Cetaphil and a topical cream hydroquinone for my acne and hyperpigmentation.

2016-09-06_9-09-38

YoDerm called my prescription into my local pharmacy and even provided me a discount coupon for the medicine when it was alerted that my insurance would not cover the $70 cost – cause… “cosmetic.”

2016-09-06_9-08-55

My doctor also requested that I follow up in three months and upload new photos so he can evaluate how my treatment is progressing.

2016-09-06_9-09-16

The Verdict:

Overall, the YoDerm feels like a no-brainer solution to a pretty common skin problem. The system is user-friendly and I appreciated that they kept everything simple and streamlined. Honestly, I had delayed testing the company because I thought the process was going to be way more complicated. It was nice that it was so easy.

I’ll update my review in three months to let you know how my treatment is going. In the meantime, YoDerm is providing my readers $10 off their first consultation.

It’s worth checking out if you’re tired of dealing with acne and don’t want to mortgage your home for treatments.

Skin,

Tips For Keeping Your Skin Spring Ready During Cold Winter Months

My hubby tells me quite frequently that he loves my smooth and soft skin. He’s kind of wonderful like that (don’t hate us :), we’re adorable). I have to be honest and admit it’s a compliment that I take great pride in receiving because I put a lot of effort into keeping my skin spring ready all season long.

2015-05-14 08.46.25I have really dry skin, which can be really painful if I don’t keep it moisturized properly. The winter can be especially tough because the cold, dry air outside doesn’t provide any natural moisture at all to my skin. And the high dry heat from indoor heating systems strips away my skin’s natural moisture.

Over the years, I’ve learned to be hypervigilant about making sure I keep my skin moisturized at all times. Within 20 seconds of stepping out the shower, I am slathered up and I cover every part of my body from my neck to my pinky toes.  I reapply the liquid gold to my hands every single time I wash them. I have to. My skin sucks up moisture like it’s sand in the hot sun.

I challenge you to try to catch me without a tube of good lotion in my purse, desk or gym bag – You never will :). In case you don’t know what my definition of good lotion is, let me explain. Squirt a glob of lotion in the palm of your hand and turn you hand upside down. If it’s watery and runs, I won’t try it. If it stays put, we are good to go.

2016-03-06 17.54.29AmLactin moisturizers have passed my good lotion test and I’ve been rocking with them this season to keep my skin winter-proof. The skincare line has really great user reviews and contains alpha-hydroxy therapy, which intensely hydrates and gently exfoliates dry, dead skin cells. It’s also the #1 moisturizer brand recommended by dermatologists for rough, dry skin.

2016-03-06 18.35.46I apply the AmLactin® Cerapeutic™ Restoring Body Lotion to my damp skin after I exit the shower and AmLactin® Ultra Hydrating Body Cream after I wash my hands throughout the day to keep my skin silky smooth. When my feet are especially dry or cracked, I’ll break out the AmLactin® Foot Cream before bed and cover them with socks overnight. My feet are usually baby smooth by the next morning.

2016-03-06 18.36.30

I will call out that while the AmLactin line is fragrance-free, it does have a faint medicinal smell when you first put it on, but it fades pretty quickly and feels like a small tradeoff for spring-approved, smooth and hydrated skin. The AmLactin line is available at local pharmacies and Amazon and runs between $7.59 – $15, so it won’t break the bank. You can also follow the brand’s Facebook and Twitter accounts for coupons and deals.

Uncover smooth, radiant skin with AmLactin Alpha-Hydroxy Skin Care. Its unique exfoliating and hydrating alpha-hydroxy therapy gently removes dead skin cells to reveal soft, hydrated skin. It’s the difference between skin care and skin therapy. AmLactin moisturizers are available on Amazon.com and at your local Target, CVS, Walgreens, Costco, Walmart and Rite Aid.

Best Beauty: A Oldie But Goodie Cleanser For Gals on The Go

Thank you Dove for partnering with me on this post. Visit your local retailer to pick up the Dove White Beauty Bar today!

I’ve been rocking with Dove since I was a little girl. I even remember the old commercials that showed the cleaning cream water falling into the pool of cream below.

Dove was my great-grandmother’s cleanser of choice and the scent still reminds me of her. She wasn’t the type to spend money willy-nilly, so for it to be one of the few beauty products that she used is saying a lot (trust me).

2016-02-23 12.12.01

As much as I love trying new beauty products, the Dove White Beauty Bar has remained a tried-and-true staple in my bathroom. I’m all about keeping my morning beauty routine simple, so the fact that it is gentle enough to use on my face and body is amazing. It’s much milder than soap and contains ¼ moisturizing cream, so my skin feels soft and radiant after use. Also, it happens to be hypoallergenic and the #1 dermatologist recommended bar and I don’t have to worry about irritation.

2016-02-23 12.10.47

I wash my face twice a day and I like that the Dove White Beauty Bar helps maintain my skin’s tone and brightness over time. And when I do my san-makeup days I don’t have to worry about my skin’s appearance or texture. My supple skin and smiling face looks great even on harsh cold winter days.

Many people spend a ton on face cleansing products, but don’t realize that a staple cleanser like Dove White Beauty Bar combine with proper washing technique is all you need. To keep your skin looking radiant in two minutes or less, follow the steps below:

2016-02-23 12.06.42

First, splash your face with warm water. Then lather the palms of your hands with the beauty bar and then apply to your complete face and neck using a circular motion. I try to do this step for at least a minute so the cleanser can penetrate my skin and neck. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry- not rub- with a clean, dry towel. I always apply a moisturizer with SPF immediately after I dry my skin.

2016-02-23 12.11.53

The Dove White Beauty Bar can be snagged at your local drugstore or supermarket and retails for around $3.79 for two bars.

Beauty Tech: A Smart Mirror That Creates The Right Makeup Lighting Every Time

Back in college, there was one particular ladies room that I use to dread going in. It’s not that it wasn’t clean, it was. The problem was every time I looked in the mirror in there, I saw death staring back at me. The fluorescent lighting was so harsh that no matter how well I thought I did my makeup in the morning, I always looked liked a paled-face harlot when I checked myself out in that restroom.

Talk about a confidence killer. After awhile I just stopped going into that ladies room to avoid the afternoon creep of self-doubt. It’s amazing how a little bad lightening can impact your mood and have you justifying a half mile trek across campus just to wash your hands.

Well, Simplehuman is betting that I’m not the only woman to experience the frustration of being caught off guard by poor lightening. The company known best for its motion sensor controlled trashcans has just released a new smart makeup mirror that simulates natural sunlight allowing users to ensure their makeup is color-corrected and flawless when applied.

Simplehuman Mirror 2The Wide View Sensor Mirror automatically lights up as your face approaches and the sensitivity of the sensor increases so it won’t turn off unexpectedly. It also contains foldable side panel so you can see your makeup application from any angle. The smart mirror is also rechargeable and can be used without a cord for up to 3 weeks on a single charge.

Simple Human Mirror 1The coolest feature about the Simplehuman Wide View Sensor Mirror is that its downloadable iPhone app allows users to capture light settings from the world around them and accurately recreates them in the mirror. So, you can take selfies of yourself at the office or at your favorite meeting spot and have the mirror recreates that lighting the next time you’re doing your makeup.

This way you can be sure your makeup looks as good in the sun as in the most fluorescent-flooded workspace.

The Simplehuman Wide View Sensor Mirror retails for $400 and includes free shipping. That’s not a bad price for the assurance that you won’t be giving your colleagues a fright each time you step in some questionable office lighting.

Be Inspired, Skin,

Walker and Co. Puts the ‘Personal’ Back in Personal Care with Products Designed for People of Color

It’s hard not to be inspired by Tristan Walker’s vision instantly. Just scrolling his Walker and Company website leaves you feeling that, this guy gets it. A company with the mission of “making health and beauty simple for people of color” doesn’t rely on flash (or brown and gold colors) to sell its products. Instead it simply highlights the product itself and all the diverse faces of its team members working to change the health and beauty industry from the inside out.

Bevel Team 1

If they can’t understand the frustration of a trillion-dollar market that is tired of being underserved and ignored in the health and beauty area, who can?

With $26M in investment from venture capitalists and celebrity investors like Nas, Walker & Co. Brands is on track make an indelible make on the personal care market. Target has already signed up to sell its flagship product, the Bevel razor system in stores and on Target.com. The single blade razor system reduces the problem of skin irritation and razor bumps for men and women with coarse, curly hair – which affects up to 80% of African Americans and up to 30% of people of other races.

Tristan Walker and Nas

The Bevel System can also be purchased directly from the brand and is $60 plus shipping and includes: a Bevel Razor and Bevel Badger Brush, a 3-month supply of Bevel Priming Oil, Bevel Shave Cream, Bevel Restoring Balm, and 60 Bevel Blades.

Bevel 2

Walker and Company Brands also recently announced the release of its second grooming product – the Bevel Trimmer. Specifically designed for people with coarse or curly hair to the proprietary designed trimmer achieves the most precise cut without irritation.

Nas is a brand ambassador for the product and is featured alongside his barber, Marcus Harvey, in its introductory video.

“This product is needed. It’s kind of crazy that there hasn’t been any real innovation in this space.  We deserve better,” said Nas. “When Tristan first showed the Trimmer to me and my barber, we knew it was a game-changer because it has what barbers and consumers want – it cuts precise and clean lines, it’s powerful, clean and well-designed.  I think people are going to love it.”

Bevel Trimmer

The Bebel Trimmer is $180 and available for pre-order. The product is expected to ship in the spring of 2016.

The 31-year old founder is staying tight-lipped on his next product release, but Fast Company’s J.J. McCorvey, reported seeing a “cluster of sample shampoos and leave-in conditioners on Walker’s desk” during a recent interview.

With a 90% reorder rate for Walker’s grooming products to date, it would be great to see him and his team bring some of that solutions-oriented magic to the hair care space (pretty, please:)). But, of course all good things take time.

Considering Walker only launched his company in 2013 and three short years later has one of the top products in the personal care space, a second product ready to launch this year, millions in VC funding, a celebrity investor starring in his commercials, customers clamoring to reorder his goods and a mission-focused team behind him; I’m guessing that there will be a lot of good created by this company for years to come.

Skin,

Best Bet: A Surprising Useful Subscription Box For Busy Professionals

Disclosure: Although this post is sponsored, all opinions and witty statements are my own:).

Subscription boxes always sounded like fun to me, but just never seemed like they would really fit into my lifestyle. New art or beauty products arriving each month sounds cool, until you have to think of a place to store them. Monthly packages of yummy snacks or wine would be great for a while, but overindulgence could very easily lead me to have to spend more time in the gym (and, who wants that?).

In my head, these boxes have the potential to become less of a treat and more of a monthly chore, so I have been wary of them. A subscription box would really need to offer me more than just surprise and momentary delight for me to want to try it.

So, color me intrigued when the new bathroom subscription service, Morgans invited me to try them out. They deliver a box of all the bathroom supplies you normally use right to your doorstep. Sometimes the best services are the simplest ones. I like the idea of saving time and money by having all the bathroom staples I purchase regularly, shipped to my door, so I gave them a try.

2015-12-20 23.05.40The sign up process was simple. I selected the items I wanted shipped on a bi-monthly recurring basis – toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, hand soap, razors and shaving cream – created my profile and went on about my day.

2015-12-14 13.46.33The items arrived a few days and I’m a little embarrassed at how delighted I felt to get a package for my bathroom. The box may have contained simple supplies, but for me it contained the joy of one less store run I’d need to make for the month. I don’t own a car so that’s one less hike from the drugstore carrying heavy bags.

2015-12-14 13.50.42The value of the supplies was pretty good especially for the price and I really loved the look and feel of the stylishly clean and simple packaging.

2015-12-14 13.49.06

Everything I’ve used so far has been great. I also really like the way the wooden toothbrushes look and the soft brush head. The products have a very light scent which is really pleasant and the lotion reminds me of lemongrass.

The shampoo and conditioner also smell lovely and I am saving them for when I (have non-transitioning to natural hair:)) guests stay over.

The Morgans bathroom box has turned out to be an ideal subscription box service for me. It is pretty convenient and makes sense for anyone with a busy lifestyle. Everything in the box is something you need and use regularly, and you don’t have to carve out time to go to the store to get it.

Morgans’ individual bathroom supplies range from $5-$12 and include free shipping for subscription orders over $25. Try them out if you want to be delighted in a surprising meaningful way.
